Feels like….

December 30th, 2009

According to Teh Weather Channel, today in the Greater Metro the air feels like one degree farenhizzle.  Everything that can possibly freeze is now frozen. Even the snow is extra frozen. Compared to my trip home last night, however, my outbound ride today was a stone-cold breeze. I dressed for 30 yesterday and got it in the morning, and then got… oh I think about 12, with 60mph wind, in the evening. I had to stop in to two different shops on the way home from work to warm up, lest I lose digits. Today I dressed for the Tundra, with socks x 3, pants x 2, shirts x 4 and the good old CLAW, and I only experienced a slight numbing of the toes before I made it to the office. The only problem I have with riding like this is what I call the Christmas Story Issue, i.e. ” I can’t put my arms down!! “. It’s so hard to get up to speed when you’ve got twelve layers on, not to mention the wind drag, please let me not mention the wind drag, because I’ll be bitching about it all day. So I won’t mention the wind drag. There, I didn’t mention it. Anyway, bundle up you bastards, but keep riding!

I have the same problem with so many layers on.
Bending over constricts my breathing so much that
I’m gonna have to raise my handlebars to “winter mode”.

I’m not sure how you fit into shoes with 3 pairs of socks but good for you! I just need some glove liners for when I wear the CLAW.

If it’s as windy tonight as it was last night,
I’ll save myself the suffering and take a cab to my appointment
    in Boston.

the constriction isn’t an issue for me, since Kranky is an upright-seated ship. My knees and hips are really where the pinch happens. As for the socks, my Apocalypse Boots are motorcycle boot, a mens size five or so – in the warmer weather I wear them with an insole. In this weather I layer a thin sock close to the foot, a fuzzy athletic sock over that, and a pair of my boyfriend’s fuzzy athletic socks over that. It’s a bit of a tight fit, but entirely worth it. Last night was a trial and no mistake. I went over the Mass Ave bridge, and I may as well have been walking my bike, for all the headway I was getting.
